The Kids and Their Amazing Work

3rd Graders from Dorchester, Massachusetts cleaning up their community!

John Winthorp Elementary School -
Video

Inspired by Dr.Seuss' The Lorax, students from John Winthrop Elementary School  created and implemented a brand new recycling program at their school!

Upon reading the famed book by Dr.Seuss, students identified  an environmental issue that concerned them deeply- deforestation! Saddened by such antagonist’s actions, they determined that unless someone cared enough to stand up and make a change, the situation would NOT improve. With the support of mentors from the City Year program, students implemented a recycling program by educating the school community about the problem and placing recycling bins in classrooms, hallways, and the cafeteria. They also used recycled materials to create toys, such as robots and soccer balls!

The John Winthrop students did not stop there! They also cleaned up the school playground and park! They even wrote to the Mayor explaining why they needed help to clean up dangerous materials such as broken glass. By sharing their concern about the state of the park, students were hopeful that more community members would get involved and help make a difference.

Students from John Winthrop School are Design for Change heroes, and are bringing big changes to their community!!!
